    Get stuck into an Honest Burger

    London’s best burgers

    Fine dining and gourmet fusion menus are all well and good, but sometimes only a great big burger will do. Here are some of the capital’s finest…

    Bleecker Burgers, various

    This former-vegetarian doesn’t mind telling you that a Bleecker Burger was her first burger ever. So, to me, it will always hold a special place in my heart. The latest venue is in the new Bloomberg Arcade in the City, where Bleecker will no doubt be serving its note-perfect burgers to hordes of enthusiastic bankers (Spitalfields and Victoria are where the other restaurants can be found). What the menu lacks in depth, it makes up for in quality. Want a classic American-style cheeseburger done just right? This is your best bet.

    The Rum Kitchen, various

    For fans of a burger with a difference; The Rum Kitchen, which has restaurants in Notting Hill, Carnaby Street and Brixton, is where to go. The jerk chicken burger is a true classic, and the spicy fried chicken burger with scotch bonnet mayo and ‘swamp sauce’ is a work of (very hot) art. Veggies and pescatarians can get an unrivalled fix here too; with the delicious ‘island fish’ burger and the halloumi burger with spicy avocado sauce. Sweet potato fries with chilli maple syrup are a dazzling accompaniment to your burger of choice. Oh, and there is plenty of rum to wash it all down with, of course.

    Cut and Grind, Kings Cross

    This new kid in town has already made quite some noise on the burger scene, winning 2018’s Best Burger in Britain award at the National Burger Awards. The winning candidate was the Juicy Classic; a thick cut burger paired with béarnaise sauce, cheddar and pickles. The menu allows you to construct your own burger; from a choice of cuts (brisket, rump etc) and thickness (juicy or skinny), as well as your traditional rare, medium or well done options. You then choose between a classic burger, a pared back version (all meat, sauce and no distracting lettuce) or a house special, which adds a lovely bit of maple bacon to the mix. All burgers are served with triple cooked Belgian style fries. Salivating yet?

    Kaspars, The Savoy

    Burgers are not just the reserve of the drunk walk home or a down-to-earth diner. Kaspar’s at The Savoy has got in on the action with some five-star burgers. Its classic beef burger may be pricey at £20 a pop, but the Herefordshire beef and smoked paprika mayonnaise make for a moreish pairing. The vegetarian option is also one of the finest in the capital; with a lentil, chickpea and cauliflower burger served with sweet relish, pickles, coleslaw and onion rings.

    Honest Burger is at the top of the list for many of the burger aficionados I speak to, and maybe the clue is in the name: good honest burgers. From a humble start in Brixton, Honest now has 23 locations in London alone. Its MO is all about great British produce, and now they’re their own butchers too, sourcing meat from a small farm in the Scottish Highlands. A simple but brilliant menu that doesn’t shy away from well-thought out veggie options and side dishes. The rosemary salted chips were once famously described as ‘edible crystal meth’.

    Rail House Café, Victoria

    Opened last year, Riding House Café’s little sister has brought some great alternative burgers to the scene. Vegetarians can applaud the stonkingly good smoked vegetable fritter burger, with a roll-call of yummy ingredients that include an aubergine, courgette and chickpea patty, tomato relish, tzatziki, gherkin and chips. Red-meat avoiders can also rejoice at their Sandwich La Sandwich; with buttermilk-fried chicken, aged Comté, pickled carrot and harissa aioli. It’s so good you may ditch your traditional cheeseburger.
