Gallery: Frida Kahlo at the V&A

Making Herself Up is putting Kahlo’s personal possessions and clothing on display outside Mexico for the first time

Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up opens at the V&A in June, with the show putting the personal collection of the renowned Mexican artist on display outside her home country for the first time. The exhibition will feature Kahlo’s clothes and personal possessions, including outfits, letters, jewellery, cosmetics, medicines and medical corsets.

These personal items, of which around 200 will be on show, were discovered in 2004 in The Blue House, Kahlo’s Mexico City home, which had been sealed for 50 years by her husband Diego Rivera, the Mexican muralist, following her death in 1954. The objects will appear alongside self-portraits and photographs and the exhibition will also ‘reimagine The Blue House’ and ‘explore Kahlo’s life as a child with her family up to her marriage to Rivera’

Claire Wilcox, senior curator of fashion at the V&A and the exhibition’s co-curator, says the show offers ‘a powerful insight into how Frida Kahlo constructed her own identity’ and that it is ‘a rare opportunity for visitors, offering unique access to an archive that has never left Mexico before.’

Making Her Self up opens on June 16 and runs until November 4. For more information and to book tickets, go here. See below for a sneak preview of the exhibition.
