London’s best new restaurant openings in 2018

From gourmet dumplings to Bob Bob in the City

The Greyhound Café, Fitzrovia

Thailand’s hugely popular chain of restaurants (launched by a fashion label in the late 90s) is bringing its eclectic menu, that mixes traditional Thai cookery with a wild selection of influences from across the globe, to London. Dishes include German-style golden fried pork knuckle with spicy tamarind curry paste, wok-fried spaghetti with mixed seafood and ‘angry’ sauce and scallop pad thai. The Fitzrovia restaurant is the first Greyhound to open in Europe. Expect more to follow. Open now

Avobar, Covent Garden

Our collective obsession with avocados has led to the inevitable – the opening of a restaurant dedicated to the green stuff. Avobar will serve up grub from breakfast through to dinner, with a menu that will include dishes such as avocado and spicy tuna and aubergine fries with avocado dip. Opening in early

Din Tai Fung, Tottenham Court Road

Din Tai Fung, the stellar Taiwanese restaurant chain, is following in the Greyhound Café’s footsteps this year by opening its first European branch. The restaurant will open in the Centre Point building and there’ll surely be queues out the door for the Xiao Long Bao, Din Tai Fung’s famous steamed soup dumplings. Opening in mid-2018

Brigadiers, Bloomberg Arcade

This spring you’ll be able to eat barbecued Indian delights at Brigadiers, which is taking up residence in the Bloomberg Arcade alongside a number of other great restaurants including Bleecker Burger, Caravan and Homeslice. Inspired by the mess taverns of the Indian military, the restaurants will use tandoors, wood ovens and kadais (authentic Indian fire-bowls) to serve up rotisserie duck, suckling lamb, ‘tomahawk’ steak and plenty more. And, as Brigadiers is from the same company behind the Michelin-starred Gymkhana, another cracking Indian eatery is almost certainly on the way. Opening in spring

Zia Lucia, Brook Green

This popular Islington pizzeria is now heading west, opening another branch in Brook Green. Zia Lucia, which means Auntie Lucy, offers all the traditional favourites, but also mixes things up with charcoal and wholemeal pizza bases on the menu. Opening in late January

Rudies, Shoreditch

This Jamaican restaurant will be cooking up delicious Jamaican food at Shoreditch’s Boxpark from early 2018. Rudies meat is marinated for 24 hours and signature dishes include curry goat and jerk chicken, which is cooked in traditional jerk drums. Opening in January

Petersham Nurseries, Covent Garden

The Petersham Nurseries Café in Richmond is one of London’s quiet stars, but a new branch in Covent Garden will bring its brand of delicious, seasonal and unfussy food to a wider audience. The shop, florist, cellar and deli, which serves up soups, sandwiches and salads, are open for business right now. La Goccia, with a menu of Italian-inspired small plates, and à la carte restaurant, The Petersham, will follow shortly. Opening in spring

Prosecco House, Tower Bridge

The name of this new establishment is what caught our eye – and what’s not to like about a place dedicated to the art of fizz? The food will be appropriately Italian, with cicchetti, focaccia sandwiches and cheese and meat selections on offer –  but really it will be all about what you wash it down with. Opening in February

Bob Bob Cité, The City

Opening in the Leadenhall Building, aka the Cheesegrater, this is the sister restaurant to the beloved Bob Bob Ricard. Head chef Eric Chavot promises twists on Bob Bob favourites, such as chicken kiev with brioche dumpling stuffing. Here’s hoping the ‘press for the champagne’ buttons, that are such a feature of the original restaurant, also make it to the new location. Opening in January
