Outdoor cinemas are now an established feature of London summers and here’s our guide to best places to catch films in the fresh air…
Rooftop Film Club
This outdoor cinema company aims to create the most comfortable film viewing experience going, with wireless headphones to eliminate the sound of popcorn munching, as well as candy-striped deckchairs to lounge on. Venues include the Roof Gardens in Kensington, the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch and the Bussey Building in Peckham. Upcoming films include Top Gun, T2: Trainspotting and La La Land.
From Ascot Racecourse to Kensington Palace, Luna Cinema screens classic films in stunning locations in and around the capital. Moulin Rouge, Dream Girls, Breakfast at Tiffany’s are all part of the summer programme and the Sicilia Roots food stand will be serving up wood-fired pizzas and gourmet burgers.
Film4 Summer Screen
From August 10-23, the Film4 Summer Screen will bring a fortnight of great cinema to Somerset House. Films including Moonlight, Donnie Darko, and Jaws will be screened, plus there’s the UK premiere of The Square, the winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Each movie will be preceded by a specially tailored DJ set. Food stalls are on hand to keep you well fed – picnic hampers are also available.
Pop-Up Screens focus on providing a relaxed movie-watching atmosphere with venues in Hammersmith, Canada Water and Fulham. There’s always a fully-stocked bar and food available to purchase, and this summer’s celluloid offerings include classics such as ET, Shaun of the Dead and The Big Lebowski.
Including Backyard Cinema, which started off as a domestic cinema project in the founder’s garden, is a slight cheat as it’s an indoor cinema at the top of Southwark’s Mercato Metropolitano building. But it’s worth a place in our list because its Miami Beach theme is bringing the sunshine indoors, along with sand, sea and cocktails, for a memorable cinematic experience. Be warned, tickets go quick for Backyard screenings – films scheduled for the coming weeks include Logan, Grease and Pretty Woman.
