On Thursday night, Banqueting House opened its doors to the dance world’s finest movers and shakers for a night of decadence in aid of premature-birth charity Borne. As ballerinas and tap dancers alike descended on Whitehall, guests chowed down on a menu of beetroot carpaccio and lamb before being treated to performances from the English National Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Strictly Come Dancing and the BalletBoyz.
Leading the festivities were Darcey Bussell and Michael Nunn, the hosts for the evening, who assured cash-conscious attendees that this was no ordinary fundraiser — there would be no auction. Still, the Strictly Come Dancing judge did manage to bring out the big guns for the occasion — enticing Strictly couple Janette Manrara and Aljaž Skorjanec to perform one last duet before their wedding day, now ‘very, very soon’. Other guests in attendance included Dragon’s Den investor Touker Suleyman and actor Natascha McElhone — who had much to celebrate, with her new Netflix series Designated Survivor picked up for a second series.
Despite the lack of an auction — silent or otherwise — the charity managed to raised more than £100,000 in donations. With that part of the evening out of the way, guests and performers made their way to the Groucho for the after party.
